I am a big fan of cinema and watching movies is a thing that I have given a great deal of time. Cinema is an art form which has the potential to challenge, realize and change people’s lives. But I feel like due to commercial focus of cinema it has lost its moral essence as people pay for the movie that’s fun with exaggerated actions, romance and storyline with big actors and promotion.
Directors are the storytellers where writers write its story but mainstream cinema is runned by people seeking profit where of course it’s focus is profit not that story that movie holds. Using the same formula and storyline as long as it’s profitable is a common trait in generic movies nowadays. As everything revolves around the cycle of demand and supply, people look for actors rather than the directors. Every director has his/her own way of conveying the magic of the story and they have their own philosophical ideas. Where I feel like as a consumer we should be more dutiful while choosing a movie to watch. Where promotion through word-of-mouth is a powerful promotion tool we hold and watching a movie which holds value in them should be appreciated by us.
I watched Masaan as it was recommended with movies like Lunchbox and tamasha where I was attracted by its title and setting of the story. I saved it for Friday and I watched it. Wow! Masaan is a remarkable movie. And after a long time I found a movie that touched me. Released in 2015 masaan is a cinematic masterpiece. It will remain as a movie that will be recommended for a long time by me and so here is my reason why Masaan is a masterpiece according to me:-
Following Descriptions contains spoilers!!
I am not a critic, but as an audience I really find myself connected to the characters of Masaan where their actions justify themselves. Vicky Kaushal's role as Deepak showed me the spectrum of his acting. He as a introvert, curious young man and his silent character reflecting his feelings by the expression was really resonating for me. I feel his sorrow after Shaalu's death wrecked him. How he experiences the philosophies and leans with the wave of life and primarily the scene of him diving in the river for shaalu’s ring and coming out as a calmer man was a really loved scene by me. And the scene with his friends in which the way he cries was really something that makes me about to shed tears.
Shallu’s character as a mature, extrovert girl complements and completes the contrast of their relationship. Her last call of expressing her love to Deepak(Vicky kaushal) as well as her acting really convince me that her acting is based on true grounds.
Devi was the character which I found myself to be most curious about. Where the story begins to start with her, it shows how silent she is and how Piyush's death (her love interest) has affected her. Devi being vulnerable from heart but acts like a strong woman and devi’s imperfection about various situations felt so real.
Where other actors also did splendid work. Sanjay Mishra’s acting as devi’s father and the little boy who works for him, finding Shaalu's ring and devi’s father paying money by selling that ring to that corrupt police held a massive ironic twist.
The storyline of the movie is very impactful where its mysterious plot and ironic, philosophical moments have already shown that the movie is a masterpiece on its own. The character building and the choice of Ghazals and poetry was really loved by me. Where less but impactful dialogues have also shown me about the characters stand point.
The setting of the story and the choice of character’s family and ethnicity was very clever. The story’s reflection on how a burning dead body’s fire lights the house of people gained great attention and interest from me. A collision of music and religion as well as the end of the movie in sangam where the two character’s story gets into one and becomes a philosophical musical ending according to me.
The cinematographic choice for cutting and using scenes simply was loved by me where it wasn’t as fast pacing as the mainstream movies nowadays where it uses the power of pause and mute dialogues showed the depth of life. Where despite of average bollywood movie, Masaan add music in story with adding it in accordance with story enhancing the depth and feel of movie and speaking the heart of characters.
Also the environment around the character shows their condition in which the choice of fog around the movie and depiction of running train in background while deepak reciting the ghazal touched me. The building of suspense in which Devi meets piyush’s parents scene to be used as a X factor and left upon people’s thought was a great choice. I loved the depiction of Deepak's moving on after shallu’s death in water was a strong point. The cutting of scenes after showing parallel story and making the camera effects simpler which adds gravity to the story.
I believe masaan movie is the beautiful compilation of various philosophies where choice of religious aspects in storytelling added more debt. Where scenes also showed the status of society in which devi’s late journey with piyush’s dead body getting stopped or scene where deepak desperately jumps in the river but returns back with an understanding of life for moving on.
I loved the ending scene showing the fog getting away and their journey to sangam. The depiction of love through balloons and how shaalu’s fills the contrast of their relationship with her poems and ghazals. I also later realize how subjective success can be for people. It is not only about where you have reached but also about where you start from after hearing the interview of Vicky Kaushal about masaan. Depicting the story and philosophies with silence had made this move a masterpiece for me.
And finally for uniqueness the movie stands out for me by its slow pacing plot and power patience and being a movie with such a heavy message about life and its shades. Masaan shows the situation of people with society’s structure. It showed me what happiness is and how sorrow acts in life. It shows the principle of letting go and moving on with the calmness of life. It has shown life is a long stay rather than a few seconds reels. By showing life’s story of two people with extraordinary settings and story with various unique methods and variation.
Masaan was a box office flop but i believe it is a movie to be highly recommended for experiencing how impactful a peaceful and good storytelling can be without high budgets or high dopamine hits but just showing life itself .
