A man and his alter ego. A divide between his wants and needs. Holding on tightly to his white-collar, corporate job that is making him miserable and wanting that freedom and rebellion to live his life to the fullest in the way he wants. This isn't just the story of a man. This is the story of countless people who are living under the same condition of division between their wants and needs. This man’s alter ego provides him and all other men an opportunity to live their lives according to their wills without giving a fuck about their bounds of morality and persona in society.
This is one of “those” movies. The movie that everyone thinks is cool and mind blowing. The author does not disagree. Directed by David Fincher and released in 1999, It is considered to be a masterpiece that is thought-provoking and unforgettable. I had to watch this movie 3 times and only on my third attempt did I complete watching it. On my first two tries, I kept on falling asleep. For me, it wasn't as interesting or engaging enough. Maybe I wasn't able to understand the movie in the depth of which it is or maybe I wasn't ready to watch it with an open mind.
Regardless, this movie did have a humorous appeal and gave a lot of sarcasm and satire. It showcased the struggles that the working class men have to go through and was able to display it in an interesting manner; really getting into each fold of the viewer's mind and twisting it. The camerawork and acting was also very admirable as the actors truly portrayed each emotion, making it seem real. Moreover, the movie conveyed important philosophies like nihilism and consumerism and has been executed with great precision to detail.
In a nutshell, the movie has been delivered excellently and talks about important issues, well beyond the ones mentioned in this review with multiple hidden imageries and symbolisms. (all open to interpretations, we would love to hear what you’ve noticed in the film).
