Background
First things first, I watched this movie on my bus journey to my village. And also at night, so there's that. I would say, "Yep, there are things I might have missed," but I don't think "a lot" as I did rewatch it later once I reached my village.
And I have to say that Blackmail 2018 starring Irrfan, Kirti Kulhari, Divya Dutta, Omi Vaidya, directed by Abhinay Deo is a fun, interesting ride with no cheap jokes or story, but rather consisting of natural, right-hitting storytelling.
Review
The movie is unique. Firstly, the risk filmmakers take as the movie's format seems a bit off the track of a conventional 'Bollywood' movie, which is later seen in its box office for being a sleeper hit.
It has done great work on its story too, which seems mature, true, and relatable where characters consist of their own curves of bad and good. "The story values itself," for which I meant it's not serving the stardom or nudity, but rather its own fun which hooks the audience.
Story
Expressing its story: it's a fun bend through its characters.
Its twists are fun, and it's seen that they have actually worked on the story as it has a wholesome plot.
In its visual storytelling too, we can see reflections of characters and story through clever metaphors.
It has presented strong character building and connection with the audience.
Acting
Firstly, natural. Actors have done a nice job of expressing their character's personality. Where special shout-out to Arunoday Singh's acting in this.
But I sensed the film's editing messed up the actor's acting in some places too.
Cinematography
Well, it's good. It's blending in nature. And it seems to work right.
Although some things could have been improved, I can also sense the style of theme the movie presented, so it's okay.
BGM
Well, this is grey. BGMs are great on the film for carving a specific emotion or setting a mood.
But it's spoon-feeding in nature too. Also, considering the audience it's targeting, it's also used for making the audience 'busy,' as I would say.
Where it has also been a savior of mistakes on other aspects of the movie.
Audio & Editing
I would say they aren't so good. Like audio feels too much add-on and not natural. Editing in many places has stopped the film from being more impactful or legendary.
Conclusion
Here is my view on Blackmail. It's a fun go-to movie to watch. And surely will provide you with a new experience of cinema. I hope to see more movies like these being celebrated among people.
