The reason to start this blog is also to reflect my view on our Overstandardization and Test-driven Nepali Educational system and institutes. I have been commenting our Nepali education system but now I have a space on the internet where things I feel can be expressed and my views can hold a value. I have found many teachers also aren’t satisfied by educational methods and policies. Change is required in our nation and it can't be delivered in this system of education.
I have a huge discomfort and denial towards educational methods here. Education being a basic human need hasn't been effective in Nepal I would say destructive cause for students and the nation's future. Educational systems and rules are taking creativity, innovation, bravery and filling students with anxiety, fear and discipline. Being a student I am barely able to sustain myself in this system. Our Nepali education system is in a very bad condition which is harming the lives of students. So here is my personal naked truth about this educational system in Nepal.
Formal Education in Nepal didn’t have a long history and it is just a copy of Indian education
where we have shifted from our traditional gurukul education system without taking its
effectiveness and moralities. I recall the quote of Oscar Wilde that this system creates the civil that
know the price of everything but value of nothing.
Things I hate:-
I still don’t know where to use the formula of (a+b)^2. I knew the formula but if the condition came where I have to use it I won’t be able to recognize it. Teaching without being accountable for its use is just forcing or torturing young minds.
I believe we can all agree on how slow and outdated our curriculum is. In our societal structure this education system doesn’t make any sense. Our society is fueled by legends and myths and has a One-Size-Fits-All education system ( Teaching approach that does not take into account the diverse learning styles and abilities of students, resulting in ineffective instruction for many) which teaches facts only but no tolerance. And society with such variation where education is filled with theorems and facts which are fluently available on the internet.
Exams with no value for practical marks and practice conducted by student and inflexible courses where a person like me who wants to study subjects of various streams don’t have a choice but to choose costly A Levels. Provision of Spoon-feeding teaching ( Teaching students with all the information they need without encouraging independent thinking or problem-solving skills.) is an issue in our society.
Examination asking information available in fingertips and checking one’s capacity to remember. Where memory is not at slightest related to a person’s intelligence or wisdom.
Education is achievable through everywhere but not everyone is capable of it especially in the young state and a teacher is required there to teach, solve their queries or guide them for better understanding of educational subjects but also to guide them with moral values and moral compass. Some Nepali parents also are extremist for something such as education which is supposed to provide freedom to humans. The education system is based on the one made by Britain decades ago, which even though they have changed a lot since now but we are just pressuring students to follow the old ones.
Scolding and punishing students brutally was the common thing for students in the past where recently only it has been stated as wrong and unconventional method. But even now teachers don't value it. Being a completely grown human with capacity to determine right and wrong. I still don't fully understand how they do so? Unnecessary asking of homeworks, notebook and scolding for silence from young minds filled with creativity even when not necessary are just some common traits of an average Nepali teacher. Pressure towards finishing the course and provision of very less salary and much more work is the common suffering of a teacher. Oh! And labelling students is teachers favourite game as our society, teachers also love to label students. Teachers judging their students as good/bad , disciplined/undisciplined is the worst thing they can do. Students have their own personalities, our own way and our own thinking ideals.
Not Everyone can be confined within four walls for learning. Teachers' moral principle is to motivate students to find their interested path and guide them not only to just reciting and explaining textbooks. In the age of internet teachers can be said irrelevant if they don’t be a friend, mentor and guide for students for success in their life. Teachers can forced by institutes and feared by their jobs but it doesn’t justify their action. A teacher should be more of a teacher than they are now. They should be relevant and dynamic among students. I as a student have always loved a teacher who not only teaches but shares their experience and motivates students to do more good and listen to them.
Institutes are one of the root causes of this ineffective provision of education for students. The institute's useless and ineffective method of teaching and profit-oriented concentration is the cause of failure of the education system in Nepal. The government provides curriculum to be taught while institutes have power to choose their method and system of conducting. As an institute imparting education should have seen the bigger image of education. The institutes should be aware and should be friendly towards students. The gap between administration and students should be removed.
I believe no institute’s head has innovation or thought of a system in accordance with the vision of education and just copying and making rules that parents want.
Criticising the government is nothing new. Throughout Nepal people have been criticising the government.
The government has taken steps such as free education up to high school but it’s not enough. I believe Nepalese are among the highest tax payers in Asia with billions from remittance and millions of money from NGOs and INGOs. Failure of the government for not being able to make education accessible throughout the Nation and second is minimal provision of quality education where in Nepal a large chunk of girls leave studying when they hit puberty. The world needs collaborators not competitors in which our education system needs to add space for all the types of students as Introverts and of LGBTQ communities too.
The government is the highest active authority and it should provide flexibility and quality in education. Students who dream of being outside a doctor, pilot and engineer should be equally encouraged. Our nation lacks entrepreneurs, philosophers, writers, painters ,singers and many more and we as a society don't encourage that. Bullying should be removed and Parents should be encouraged for liberal thinking and encouraging their children. Taunting children as a parent is a poison that reduces self-confidence and creativity in children.
