Introduction

Hello! After my last blog about masaan movie I look for new and more silently renowned topics to write upon. Being suggested by my friend abhista. I am writing this article about the "How Can Science and Religion Coexist Today? A Student's Perspective"

Religion has been a long ride for me where in the last years I have been repealed with it. After studying sources for this article I knew about why religion grew in the past and why it needs to be preserved in the world.

Due to which I can say the exposure of religion that I got was just a collection of traditions, bad interpretations and ill practices in society and I recommend this to you because maybe you have been exposed the same way I was.

Religion

1. How did religion start?

Religion has been with us since the old days as I believe it answered the unknowns around us. The beginning of religion remains unknown where as of now the majority of world populations follows a certain religion.

Religions could have been started due to human needs and structural development of the society where organized religion emerged as a means of providing social and economic stability. It justified the central authority, which in turn possessed the right to collect taxes in return for providing social and security services to the state.
Theories for established of religions comprises of:

Big Gods Theory (it says religion was necessary for finding new ways of holding and growing communities together)
False Agency (it link sense of deity with a cognitive mistake where they misguided themselve)

2. What does religion promote?

I believe religion’s main and foremost meaning contains a request for avoiding violence, greediness, dishonesty and other bad behavioural traits.

Various evidence indicates that the regular practice of religion has beneficial effects in nearly every aspect of social concern and policy. Religion gives meaning and purpose to life.

Many things in life are difficult to understand in the past, but even in today’s scientific age, much of life and death remains a mystery, and religious faith and belief help people to make sense of the things science cannot tell us.

It reinforces social unity and stability. And have given a common set of beliefs which is thus an important agent of socialization .

3. How has it contributed?

Religion is the root cause for the structure of society and the formation of government. The kingship and monarchs have been associated with deities in the past for their right to rule.

It has given controlled crimes as law of order wasn't a big thing it is now. For example, the Ten Commandments in Judaism and Christianity outline moral obligations such as honesty, respect for others, and the sanctity of life.

Religion hugely influences cultural practices, ranging from art and music to language and cuisine. It offers principles for distinguishing right from wrong and encourages people for good deeds.

4. Why is it not resonating with the present generation?

Data around the world have shown about the increase in atheism in the present generation. I believe along with time religions teaching have been moulded and using religion for bad practices and violence. Reflecting religious people as an old and backward person for youths.

Science has given satisfactory answers about the things people are curious about rather than religion but I myself don't think this as a major cause, as religion comprises many other things.

illustration for young people's mind

Where right parenting around the world provides children flexibility towards religion. Children’s own conclusions on ideological matters is viewed as a moral necessity by more and more parents too.

With new acceptance of multiculturalism people are more alert for changing their beliefs. Where now religion is viewed as immoral: Many people view religion as a burden on society or themselves.

protest against homosexuality for being a sin

Rules such as having to take time out to go to church every Sunday, praying regularly, not eating pork, sexual abstinence ,fasting being against homosexual relationships and abortions seems like a waste of time or even immoral.

Contributing factors for foreign wars have been deeply rooted due to religious ideologies have made more and more young people skeptical of religion's ability to provide peace and stability. Also Religion is viewed as a form of propaganda: Others see religion as a method of controlling the masses.

5. Does actual religion still exist?
picture showing gossip as agent of religious information

Religion has a long history due to which it has personally made me sketiful. Do it’s main moral values and legends still remain effective, true and unbiased? or like many other superstitions it has lost its value along with time. The distorted meaning of religion has caused violence and conflicts although non-violence remains as a moral duty in several religions in the world.
I believe the core teaching of all religions is for the security of society and families, making people dutiful and responsible by showing fear or presence of greater power as observing them.

Where in today’s world people have grown into realists which doesn’t resonate purely with the presence of supreme creatures or other things stated in religion.

Science

1. How did science start?

Self-awareness/self-conscious way of thinking is the start of science

We have always been curious and ambitious for knowing how things work the way they do or also about how the future is going to be. For example, In prehistoric times we have observed the heavens and claimed the position of the sun, moon and stars for seasonal change.

picture of Pythagoras

Greeks such as Pythagoras developed the theory behind their observations who concentrated on a mathematical view of the world and Aristotle and Plato developed logical methods for examining the world around them. Greeks were the first to suggest that matter was made up of atoms — fundamental particles that could not be broken down further.

The traces of mathematical knowledge also appear in the Indian subcontinent. The people of this indus valley civilization made bricks in the proportion 4:2:1, which is favourable for the stability of a brick structure. They also tried to standardise measurement of length to a high degree of accuracy. And science started its first steps.

2. What does science promote?

Science influences countless decisions we make each day. Science offers a rich context for developing many 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and information literacy .

Where various aspects of science have helped humans with problems in life.

It helps to promote a longer and healthier life, helps us for our basic needs and wonderful latest communication technology.

Science And Religion Together?

The basic goal of science is to explain natural process, explore their causes, predict their future behaviour, and manage the outcomes. It has provided mankind with gains of greater understanding of his past and knowledge that can be used to change the future.

picture connecting science and religion

Both science and religion have evolved and changed over time. Many years ago science developed with a great deal of guesswork, supposition, and superstition. Both science and religion may seem to disagree within themselves.

Science explores the natural world and believes only what can be seen, tested, and repeated using evidence and logic. Religion acknowledges the existence of supernatural forces as a matter of course.

Science is not intended to explain and direct every aspect of life: Religion, on the other hand, addresses moral issues, values, rights, and relationships. The late German-born physicist Albert Einstein believed that science without religion was lame, and religion without science was blind.

picture connecting science and religion

Scientists such as Stephen Jay Gould (1999) claim that science and religion are compatible because they deal with different areas of life that do not overlap and can exist side by side. Science aims to define the evolution and the laws of nature. Religion is set to define the meaning of life and provide moral guidance and psychological relief.

I believe religion need to be redefined. Religion have in many places cause/promote pseudo science where a I say a scientific approach is must in life. Religion can only be effective if we have a scientific approach towards it that means it needs to be redefined by every person for himself/herself. Religious/Scientific person is nothing more than a loving person which isn't blinded in any state in his/her life
