Introduction

'Cosmos Room' is an ethnographic documentary that covers the story of a room on top of the famous 3G Honacha tavern in Patan, Lalitpur. The film explores its necessity, which introduces the idea of a free space in theatre practice. Because of this, it is also named "SPACE". We have interviewed Nirbhik Bhattarai, an aspiring performer who is among the founders/initiators behind this practice. This documentary started as my assignment for a social science class that provided my peer Janak and me an opportunity to capture its story for everyone. I was involved with "SPACE" even before the assignment. It has been my personal symbol of resistance, hope, and a shade in my lost life within this city.

This journey of making has reminded me and taught valuable lessons of how a movie is more than its implied meaning. My test audience's positive response towards this stood as a testament to how badly we all crave a raw, objective cinema where we put the emotional input voluntarily. From being skeptical about if an academic, research movie like an ethnography will have any style to now it being something so genuinely fun proved me wrong (and I am really glad it did). My exploration of managing the thin line of making it biased (as bias is always there) enough that it is objective as an ethnography challenges me to learn more about filmmaking.

This story of 'SPACE' is a story that just started that can take any direction. It stands as a hosting hub for creatives and nomads. (And I won't steal your thunder now to describe it further, as you believe.)

Conclusion:

It's my first documentary as a filmmaker. A big chunk of it uses archival footage where I, also as an editor (every independent aspiring filmmaker haha), added my spices. This film in itself is an introductory video on SPACE made for my ethnography assignment for Social Science this semester, where we had a runtime limit of 10 minutes (which I have exceeded by a bit). Aloha!
